On August 16th, 2007, ClearWay Minnesota launched
www.freshairmn.org, a website designed to help Minnesotans prepare for the October 1st enactment of the Freedom to Breathe Act of 2007. The website provides information and resources to help Minnesota’s business community and public transition to going smoke-free. Available information includes; tips on how to help businesses with customer compliance and employee implementation, how to order free smoke-free signs, and how the public can access smoking cessation resources. This website is a great resource for our communities.
- University of MN Duluth goes smoke-free!
As of September 1st, 2007 the University of MN Duluth will be a
smoke-free campus. The Chancellor announced on Monday, July 9th
the new campus smoking policy. This is exciting news and we
applaud the efforts of the UMD Student Health Advisory Committee
and the UMD Campus Safety, Health and Emergency Preparedness
Advisory Committee and the Chancellor for their leadership in
the arena of smoke-free campuses. See
more information on the policy.
- Freedom to Breathe Act of 2007
In 1975, Minnesota became the first state to pass
legislation limiting smoking in the workplace. The historic
Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act required separate no-smoking
areas in most indoor work environments with the notable
exception of bars
Now, Minnesota has passed the Freedom to Breathe Act of 2007,
which will extend secondhand smoke protections to virtually all
indoor workplaces, including bars and restaurants. The Freedom
to Breathe bill was passed by a bipartisan majority of lawmakers
and signed into law by Governor Tim Pawlenty on May 16, 2007.
The law, which goes into effect on October 1, makes Minnesota
the twentieth state to go smoke-free.
Highlights of the new law:
* No smoking is allowed in bars, restaurants, private clubs or
other workplaces. * Smoking is permitted on outdoor patios, but is subject to
regulation at the local level * Indoor smoking is prohibited in public places and places of
work, except in scientific studies, theatrical productions (by
actors) and traditional Native American ceremonies; in hotel and
motel guestrooms, tobacco shops (for product sampling), a
disabled veterans rest camp in Washington County and locked
psychiatric units; and on family farms.
