2009 Smoke-free/Tobacco-free Campus Trainings

In 2007, the Healthy Campus Network, with funding from ClearWay Minnesota and BlueCross BlueShield of Minnesota, surveyed Minnesota colleges and universities gathering information current campus tobacco policies. The 2007 Campus Tobacco Policy Report showed at that time 4 Minnesota colleges and universities had adopted and/or implemented a smoke-free or tobacco-free campus policy. Since the data were collected 12 of Minnesota’s colleges and universities have moved in that direction.

These schools have navigated new territory and laid the ground work for other schools to learn from. The Healthy Campus Network held 5 regional trainings to provide information and community connections to assist additional Minnesota colleges and universities in implementing tobacco-free or smoke-free campus policies.

Participants discussed the current status and trends of tobacco policies in Minnesota and nationally.

Participants discussed stories, both successes and lessons learned, from the 12 Minnesota colleges and universities that have implemented Tobacco-free or Smoke-free campus policies.

Participants learned the essential components of a successful implementation plan for a Tobacco-free or Smoke-free campus.
